Steve DeJoie, who was recently recognized by Suburban Marquee as an “Outstanding Brother,” believes that everyone can make a difference every day, and seeks to better his community with “entrepreneur public service.”
One current program DeJoie told Suburban Marquee he is proud of his involvement with is the Community First Safe Passage initiative. The program involves community members volunteers who stand watch at gas pumps in an effort to thwart carjackings and other violent attacks, particularly against women.
“Going into week nine, we are proud that no incidents have been reported during our hours of service,” he said.
The volunteers are positioned at various gas stations between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and there has also been interest in the senior community in getting volunteers to accompany seniors while running errands, DeJoie said. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to stop by and talk with current volunteers, or email CommunityFirst2021@gmail.com.
“It is my belief that people can make a difference every day, one person at a time, where we find needs,” DeJoie said. “Through proactive efforts, I hope to make a difference in our community to help those in need find the holistic solution.”
Born in New Orleans, DeJoie was raised in Chicago and has worked for more than three decades in the city.
“I have enjoyed a diverse career in banking and business development with a passion for providing navigation to resources in finance and community services,” DeJoie said. “Through the years, I have been blessed to have worked with and been friends with people from every walk of life, and through the established relationships, the network continues to grow in service.”
DeJoie also runs Secure Concepts Consulting and is involved with Mach1Mentoring, which teaches young people life skills through restoring cars.
