Techniques Barber Shop owner Marcus Davis, a celebrity barber, loves what he does and loves the career he has chosen.

"I was the first black male barber and stylist in our film industry union here in the Midwest," Davis said in an interview with Suburban Marquee.

Since then, his operations have grown. In addition to owning and operating the Calumet City-based barber shop and salon, Davis is active in the film industry.

People from around the world have seen his work in the Barbershop films, Superman and Chicago Fire, among others.

Davis got his start in hair styling when he was just a kid.

"When I was about 10 years old, my sister's boyfriend left his scissors sitting on the couch and I wanted my hair cut so I could look good for the girls at school on Friday, and he wouldn't cut my hair, so I picked up the scissors and tried to do it myself," Davis said.

The first time he tried to cut his own hair, he ended up with a bald spot, but he eventually learned how to do hair after he tried multiple times. Pretty soon he was the best stylist around.

"As the years go by, I started taking care of my nephews, people around the block, the neighborhood, and it just...picked up," Davis said.

Davis said hair became his passion. No one in his family was doing anything like that, so he went and got licensed and made it a career.

"It's been great to me," Davis said. "God has truly been good to me and my family."

Davis set up his salon in 1996 when he was in his early 20s.

"I followed my passion," Davis said. "There are negative people around all the time, but you can't let that discourage you."

After making that single decision to pick up those scissors and master his own cut, Davis said everything has fallen into place and his career has unfolded with hard work.

"I have my freedom to do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it," Davis said.

Davis said all the changes he took throughout his career, he took with no fear.

"I felt that God had my back," Davis said. "I knew that if I didn't at least try, I would've failed because I hadn't tried."

Davis has been the head barber on the set of many movies and television shows including Empire, Four Seasons, Chicago Fire, The Chi, Man of Steel, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Roll Bound, Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business.
