There's something about the feeling of a new haircut, and for those who want a barbershop or salon that caters to their client's individual styles and provides a family-oriented, inviting and upscale atmosphere while supporting a black-owned business, look no further than Groomology Barber & Beauty in Hazel Crest.

Davonte McKenzie started Groomology to create a place for barbers and hairstylists to flourish their creativity while changing the feel of the average unisex hair shop.

"The vision began with a name that could be franchised and rang when you hear it," McKenzie told The Suburban Marquee. "The colors, slogan, the decor and many small details went into creating a space not only for my barbers and stylists but myself as well!."

Traditionally, barbershops and beauty salons have been a place where black men and women find sanctuary and can talk about their social and political ideas while offering economic independence. McKenzie's shop does just that, a warm place for conversation while making an honest living.

"I am a proud, young, 33-year-old black business owner and feel I can really make a change," he said. "My client responses over the years show that my small strides are not unnoticed."

McKenzie has been a licensed barber since 2013. Since then, he's developed the skillset needed to make it in the hair business. He and his wife, who serves as Groomology's chief financial officer, are expecting twins in a few months. His family is his motivation to keep pushing to succeed.

"There is a lot more to come from Groomology Barber & Beauty," he said. "This is only the beginning."

Groomology has several licensed barbers, natural hairstylists and braiders and loc stylists.

They aren't sponsored by any specific product but use numerous brands to help their customers get the hairstyle and look they want.
